Author Interview with N Dune

Well it is time for another author interview, and this time it is with Nat Dune. Nat is an indie author with a wide range of books to choose from. I have recently discovered her books, though we have been friends on Instagram for a while. I have just begun the Tide series, and I must say the first one in the series has me wanting more!

Check out her answers to the questions I posed for her.

How do you approach the writing process? Are you a planner or a panster?

I’m definitely a pantser through and through. Flying by the seat of my pants and forever in a state of chaos with my writing. I don’t plan anything and quite often have several books on the go at the same time. What I write depends entirely on which characters are shouting the loudest, and they always manage to surprise me. That’s what I love about being a pantser.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block, and if so, how do you push through it?

Yes, occasionally I stop writing for long extended periods of time. Reading helps me; I’m forever reading something, so I just leave the writing and burrow into a good series or fly through some standalones. But I usually find that, because I write several books at once, I can put a few words down in one of them even if it’s just a scene that has been playing on my mind.

What inspired you to become an indie author instead of pursuing traditional publishing?

I love the freedom it gives me and the fact that I have complete control over my own writing. I also love the fact that I have no deadlines except those I choose to set myself. I can stop writing if I’m burnt out or life gets in the way.

As well as being an author, I have a job and a family, so being an indie means I can work my writing career around them. Plus, I can jump genres and experiment as much as I like without anyone telling me what I should be writing or how much.

The covers I have had designed for my books are ones I’ve chosen, likewise the formatting, and even though I pay someone else to do both, I get to choose what my books look like and where they will be sold. All of that and more mean I will always be an indie author.

How do you stay motivated to keep writing and publishing independently?

I think a lot of my motivation comes from the lovely readers who tell me how much they enjoy my books—this and the fact that I really love telling stories. I refuse to put pressure on myself or my editor, so I’m just happy to write and release my books as and when they are ready.

What is next for you?

The duet I published in 2025 took a lot out of me emotionally, so I’ve taken a little break. Plus, I started a new job, which has taken up a lot of my time and energy. But I have several books on the go in the background, some paranormal, some contemporary. I guess we will have to see where they take me. I have learnt not to mention what I’m planning to publish next, because my characters always have other ideas, and it ends up being a completely different book than I anticipated.
